We recently repaired a Volkswagen Polo that had been involved in a side impact collision on the roads around Halifax. The passenger side of the car had taken the full force of the impact, leaving significant damage that needed expert attention to put right.

Our customer needed the car repaired properly and returned quickly, so they could get back to their normal routine.

The Damage: A Side Impact Collision

Side impacts are among the most challenging types of accident damage to repair. Unlike the front and rear of a car, the sides have relatively little crumple zone to absorb energy, so the force of a collision often passes into the doors, sills and pillars.

On this Polo, the damage was concentrated along the passenger side, affecting the bodywork, the paint finish and potentially the structure beneath.

The Insurance Claim: Choosing Your Own Repairer

Our customer made a claim through their insurer and nominated us as their preferred body shop. Many drivers do not realise that it is their legal right to choose where their vehicle is repaired, even if their insurer recommends one of its own approved repairers.

Choosing your own body shop does not invalidate your claim, and it means your car is in the hands of a team you trust.

Because we work directly with insurers, we were able to take full ownership of the repair. Our accident management team handled the paperwork and communication on the customer’s behalf, from the initial assessment through to authorisation, leaving them free to get on with their day. The customer was kept updated throughout the repair.

The Repair Process

Assessment & Strip Down

Once the Polo arrived at our Sowerby Bridge workshop, our vehicle body repair technicians carried out a detailed inspection.

We removed the damaged trim and panels to reveal the full extent of the damage, as side impacts can often hide problems that are not visible from the outside.

Any additional damage found at this stage is reported to the insurer for approval before work continues.

Structural Checks & Panel Repairs

Using our jigging facilities, we checked the car’s structure against manufacturer specifications so that it would handle and protect its occupants exactly as it should.

Correct alignment is essential after a side impact, as even slight distortion can affect handling, tyre wear and safety in any future accident.

Panels that could be repaired were carefully reshaped, while those beyond economical repair were replaced, following manufacturer approved repair methods throughout.

Paint Matching & Refinishing

With the bodywork restored, the Polo moved into our paint shop. Our paint technicians used professional colour matching technology to mix the correct shade, accounting for the natural fading that occurs over time.

We then blended the new paint into the adjacent panels, creating a seamless finish with no visible difference between old and new paintwork.

Reassembly & Final Checks

Finally, we refitted all trims, handles and fittings before checking the wheel alignment and carrying out a thorough quality inspection. Every panel gap, seal and finish was examined under bright workshop lighting before the car was cleaned and prepared for collection.

The Result: Back On The Road

We completed the repair as quickly as possible, and the Polo left our workshop looking brand new again, with no trace of the collision. Our customer was back on the road in no time, without the stress of chasing their insurer or managing the repair themselves.

We also advised them on caring for the fresh paintwork, recommending hand washing only and avoiding polish or wax for the first 30 days while the new finish fully cures.
