Every so often, we take on a project that is close to our hearts. This time, it was a 15 year old BMW 320 M Sport that our team chose to restore as a personal project.
Our aim was simple: to bring the car back to its glory days and show what can be achieved with skill, patience and the right equipment.
After 15 years on the road, the BMW was showing its age. The paintwork had lost its depth and shine, and years of daily driving had left their mark in the form of stone chips, light scratches, minor dents and scuffed bumpers.
The alloy wheels were also looking worn. Underneath the cosmetic wear, however, the car still had the sharp lines and sporty stance that made the M Sport so popular, and we could see its potential straight away.
Projects like this give our team the chance to showcase the full range of services we offer under one roof. From bodywork repairs and paint refinishing to alloy wheel restoration, this BMW brought together everything we do day to day for our customers, in a single car.
It also gave us the freedom to take our time and get every detail exactly right, without the usual pressures of an insurance deadline.
We started by giving the overall bodywork a thorough fix up. Our vehicle body repair technicians worked around the whole car, removing dents, repairing scratches and restoring the bumpers using specialist plastic repair techniques.
Deeper imperfections were carefully filled, shaped and smoothed so that every panel was perfectly straight before any paint was applied.
Preparation is the most important stage of any respray. We removed trims, badges, lights and other fittings to allow us to paint every edge properly, then masked the areas that needed protecting. The entire car was then sanded back and primed, giving the new paint the best possible base to bond to.
With the preparation complete, the BMW moved into our paint booth for a full respray. Our paint technicians applied the base coat in even layers, followed by several coats of clear lacquer to build up a deep, glossy finish.
Once the paint had cured, it was machine polished to remove any imperfections and bring out a mirror like shine.
The wheels play a huge part in how a car looks, so we gave them a full restoration. Each alloy was stripped, repaired and refinished in a new colour, giving the BMW a fresh, modern look that complements the new paintwork.
A colour change is a simple way to personalise a car, and the finished wheels are hard wearing as well as eye catching.
Finally, we refitted all the trims, badges and lights, checking every panel gap and fitting along the way. The car was then given a final detail inside and out, ready for its big reveal.
We also carried out a final quality inspection under bright workshop lighting to check the finish from every angle.
It was a big project, but one we were very happy with. The BMW now looks every bit as sharp as it did when it first left the showroom, with flawless paintwork, straight panels and striking wheels.
Seeing a 15 year old car transformed like this shows just how much life a skilled restoration can bring back into a vehicle.
